Dr. Jernej Rihter is a Research Associate at ZRC SAZU, Institute of Archaeology. His work focuses on early medieval archaeology, particularly the analysis of cemeteries and cemetery structures, as well as the typochronology of early medieval head jewellery and finger rings in the south-eastern Alps. As part of a postdoctoral project, he designed a digital tool for analysing cemeteries with extensive stratigraphy, which functions as a chronological model within the site’s Harris matrix. In collaboration with a computer specialist, he is developing and testing the tool at the Parish Church cemetery in Kranj (Slovenia), one of the largest early medieval cemeteries in the Eastern Alps. His second area of specialisation is landscape archaeology, especially retrograde analysis of the land cadastre in the Krško Plain area, particularly in connection with the Roman town of Neviodunum (Drnovo near Krško, Slovenia), where he examines the impact of Roman remains on the formation of the medieval road network and agrarian colonisation.
