PROJECT ARRS J7-1817: 5000 YEARS OF GRAZING AND MINING ACTIVITIES IN THE JULIAN ALPS (SLOVENIA) (2019-2022)
Geological research
A record of potential mining areas in the highlands will be prepared. Surface mining pits that were mentioned in historical records will be compared with older mining areas. These will also be dated using archaeological typology and radiocarbon dating. Test trenches will be excavated in the areas of anthropogenic mining pits, as well as natural surface transformations. Pedological and sedimentological description of profiles from these trenches, combined with geochemical, sedimentological and mineralogical analysis will help us to investigate various types of depressions. Criteria to distinguish natural depressions (sink-holes) and artificially shaped surface (mining pits) will be developed.
