Georeferenced dataset brings together Roman stone monuments from southeastern Slovenia
Published on: July 9, 2026A new open dataset provides a unified geospatial and lithological catalogue of 194 Roman stone monuments from southeastern Slovenia, creating a structured resource for research on the distribution, material composition and provenance of stone monuments dating primarily from the first to the fourth centuries CE. The dataset combines funerary stelae, votive altars, inscription plaques, milestones and architectural elements, with each record including typological classification, WGS84 coordinates, monument dimensions, epigraphic information, bibliographic references and macroscopic lithological attribution. By integrating archaeological and geological information within a single framework, the resource supports comparative analyses of monument distribution, stone procurement and local production systems in the Roman period.
The data were compiled through a systematic review of published corpora, museum documentation and field verification, and are provided as an open CSV dataset together with an interactive GIS interface. The author describes the resource as infrastructure for future spatial analyses, provenance studies and digital heritage research, while enabling transparent reuse of standardised documentation. The dataset is openly available through the Zenodo repository, encouraging further integration with related archaeological and geological research.
