The Roman period and the Early Middle Ages in the Eastern Alps, Northern Italy and the Western Balkans

This conference will examine the Roman period and the Early Middle Ages in the Eastern Alps, Northern Italy and the Western Balkans. It will take place on the occasion of the 100th birthday of Jaroslav Šašel (1924−1988) and will be held at the Slovenian Academy of Sciences on 5−6 September 2024.

The year 2024 will mark the centenary of the birth of Jaroslav Šašel (1924–1988), a distinguished scholar of the Roman period in the region extending from the northern Adriatic and Eastern Alps to the central Danube and the western Balkans. His works span the period from the beginning of Roman influence in the region to the dissolution of the Roman state and the advent of the Early Middle Ages. Šašel meticulously gathered and analysed epigraphic sources and studied ancient written documents and archaeological evidence. Even in his early years as a scholar, he demonstrated remarkable expertise in field research and archaeology. Šašel's work encompasses military, political, and administrative history, as well as social, economic, and ethnic issues. This legacy continues to serve as the foundation of our knowledge and a source of inspiration decades later.

The conference will pay tribute to the work of a great researcher and demonstrate the continuity along the path he has charted. The new research results will be presented in consideration of the Roman period and the transition to the Early Middle Ages in the Eastern Alps, Northern Italy and the Western Balkans.
