Description

The conference Roman army in the regions of the northern Adriatic and Eastern Alps will be held in October 2014 in Ljubljana at the Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (ZRC SAZU). The conference is the third in a series jointly organized by the University of Udine, the University of Klagenfurt and ZRC SAZU - Institute of Archaeology. The aim of the conferences is to enhance the collaboration between the researchers of north-eastern Italy, Austria, Slovenia and Croatia.

The conference will be devoted to military presence from the time of the Roman conquest to the late Roman period (the 5th century AD) in the region comprising the present-day north-eastern Italy, the Eastern Alps and the Western Balkans. Recent archaeological excavations in the area as well as new analyses of already known archaeological and epigraphic material and ancient literary sources illuminate anew the history of the area.

All types of evidence concerning Roman military history will be discussed, from fortifications to the small remains of military equipment, from epigraphic to the iconographic monuments, from chronological problems to the study of strategy.

Lanišče

Two days (16 and 17 October) will be dedicated to lectures. For the third day (18 October), an excursion to the Roman military sites in western Slovenia is planned.

The conference is financially supported by the Slovene Archaeological Society.
