Successfully completed 2026 Fascination of Plants Day
Published on: July 1, 2026On Wednesday, May 27, 2026, the Biology Center hosted the 2026 Fascination of Plants Day, which offered visitors a varied program from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. designed to raise awareness of the importance of plants and research in the field of sciences of plants.
Visitors were able to participate in 34 interactive workshops that presented various aspects of plants and their importance to humans and the environment in an engaging and hands-on way. The program was complemented by a screening of an award-winning film about Costa Rica.
The event was attended by approximately 1,400 visitors from 31 elementary schools, Zavod za gluhe in naglušne, and Varstveno-delovni center. The large turnout and exceptionally positive feedback from participants confirm that the event successfully brings plant sciences closer to various target groups.

The event was also attended by the initiator of Fascination of Plants Day, the European Plant Science Organization (EPSO), which expressed great satisfaction with the organization and execution of the Slovenian event.
Once again this year, staff members from the Institute of Archaeology at ZRC SAZU contributed to the event’s success by leading a workshop on dendrochronology. They introduced participants to an archaeological dating method based on the analysis of tree growth, specifically the width of tree rings in wood. Through a combination of theoretical and practical work, visitors learned how well-preserved wooden remains can be used to determine the age of archaeological sites and to gather important information about the past.
