You are cordially invited to a lecture by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Benjamin Štular, who will reveal how modern tools are transforming the understanding of the archaeology of the Eastern Alps from the 6th to the 8th century. The event, hosted by ZRC SAZU and the Postgraduate School ZRC SAZU, will take place on 27 March 2024 at 11.30 in the ZRC Atrium.
The lecture is based on important advances in modern archaeology made possible by "deep data", advanced spatial analysis, LiDAR data and artificial intelligence. Preliminary results of the analysis of 1105 archaeological sites will be presented, shedding light on key themes such as the western boundary of the Avar Khaganate, the role of the "Pólis Norikón" area and the role of Slavic immigrants in the formation of Carantania. These topics are seemingly diverse, but they have a common thread that will be at the heart of the debate: the great local differences in acculturation or the process of Slavisation in the Eastern Alps.
The lecture will be held in Slovenian.
