The monograph presents a scientific analysis of the archaeological excavations at the cemetery of Verdun near Stopiče, one of the few fully investigated larger cemeteries of Late Prehistoric and Roman rural communities in the present-day Dolenjska region (SE Slovenia). Discovered accidentally during agricultural work, the cemetery was systematically investigated between 1983 and 1991 as part of the archaeological rescue excavations. Soon after its discovery, the cemetery, distinguished by its rich grave inventories, attracted the attention of both Slovenian and international archaeological communities. Selected graves and individual artefacts were featured in numerous publications. Nonetheless, a comprehensive scientific analysis of the site remained one of most significant gaps in Late Prehistoric and Roman archaeology in Slovenia.
Structured in seven chapters, the monograph provides detailed documentation of 254 graves and their rich inventories, examines funerary practices and grave goods, and situates the cemetery within a broader regional and chronological framework. It thus contibutes valuable insights into the military, political, economic, and social relations between the Roman state and autochthonous inhabitants in this area at the transition from the Late Iron Age to the Roman period.
