Archaeological excavation at Vrbičev hribec
Published on: June 1, 2026As part of the project “Before the Pile Dwellings: Early Holocene Settlement of the Ljubljana Marshes” (ARIS J7-70262), ZRC SAZU the Institute of Archaeology at the Scientific Research Center of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts is continuing its archaeological excavations at the Vrbičev hribec site in the Ljubljana Marshes this June. Vrbičev hribec is one of the few multi-layered sites in the Ljubljana Marshes where traces of pre-pile-dwelling settlement have been confirmed. Preliminary archaeological research conducted in 2024 by the ZRC SAZU Institute of Archaeology confirmed the existence of two cultural layers. Radiocarbon dating places the lower cultural layer in the Early Mesolithic, while the upper cultural layer, on which a paved surface was discovered, is dated to the Late Mesolithic.
Excavations are expected to continue until June 19, 2026.
